American Red Cross Provides Training Necessary for New Volunteers to Respond to Hurricane Katrina
Grand Rapids, Monday, August 30, 2005 — American Red Cross Chapters across the country have been inundated with caring community members who want to respond as Red Cross volunteers to the devastation and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
To encourage the participation of our community at this critical time, the American Red Cross of West Central Michigan is facilitating additional Disaster Training Courses to prepare new volunteers for response to National Disasters.
Volunteers must commit to a three-week assignment, meet all training and health requirements, and complete appropriate processing.
There is no promise that new volunteers will be immediately assigned to Hurricane Katrina. Placements are made by American Red Cross National Headquarters by matching needs with available skills. However, entry into the Red Cross system makes placement more likely in the very near future.
With limited communication from the disaster area, Red Cross is still uncertain about the extent of the devastation. However, preliminary projections indicate the response will be longer, more extensive, and more costly than what was required for the four 2004 Hurricanes combined.
